With this square-format artwork, Medsan brings the Nike Air Jordan 1 into Piet Mondrian’s grid. The most iconic silhouette of sneaker culture, born in 1985 with the Chicago colorway, fits into the vocabulary of neoplasticism, that of Composition in Red, Yellow and Blue and Black. The connection is not accidental: the red, yellow and blue of De Stijl are exactly those of the original Jordan, and the Wings logo sits in a compartment like one more module.

The treatment is that of an unapologetic pop flat wash, painted in acrylic with thick and irregular black outlines that keep a trace of the gesture. The background repeats Mondrian’s orthogonal structure — black bands, off-white reserves, primary blocks — and the canvas reveals its grain through the whites, with light impasto that catches the light. The shoe is viewed in strict profile, in slight perspective, the upper cut into colored boxes while the sole and the swoosh remain in black and white to anchor the reading. The cartouche メドサン, the artist’s signature in katakana, occupies the bottom-right corner.

The mashup says something precise about the value of images. Mondrian sought universal harmony through reduction to elemental shapes and colors; the sneaker, for its part, has become an object of devotion, collected, valued, exhibited under glass as a museum piece. By overlaying them, the work raises the question of a new master painting: the icon of 20th-century painting and the icon of streetwear now share the same wall.

A graphic piece that is immediately legible, ideal for bringing a pop and architectural touch to a contemporary interior, loft, creative office, or collector’s space attached to sneaker culture as well as geometric abstraction.
