- Antonio Iniesta Jiménez was a Spanish painter whose life trajectory was marked by the rural austerity of his origins and an childhood limp, which tempered his reserved character. Rescued from poverty by patronage, he entered in 1934 the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, though his deep sense of faith was forged during the Civil War after a providential escape, a fact that motivated him to take the Franciscan vows in 1946 and to devote his life to painting as a "debt to God". He combined his intense artistic activity with a forty-year career as a Drawing professor in Madrid, and although he experimented with figure and religious themes, his mature style leaned toward luminous landscape painting, serene and with a firm brushstroke, influenced by the light of Sorolla and the sobriety of Velázquez. Faithful to his ethics and to the conviction that art was a "way out to a world where poetry and tenderness have their seat", Iniesta stayed apart from the avant-gardes of the sixties, preferring a serene religiosity expressed in the landscapes of his homeland, leaving a prolific legacy of nearly 5,000 works.
