Description from the seller
Important large-format oil on canvas depicting an elegant gentleman dressed in attire inspired by the 17th century, set on a terrace or monumental architectural gallery. The character appears relaxed and distinguished, leaning beside a decorated balustrade, holding a stringed instrument, probably a mandora or Renaissance lute.
The composition stands out for the richness of decorative elements surrounding the main figure: carved stone steps, ornamental tracery, climbing vegetation, a large garden urn, and an architectural background dominated by towers with conical roofs that add depth and theatricality to the scene. The whole scene unfolds under a sky with strong atmospheric presence, with dark clouds contrasting with areas of bluish light.
The work shows notable technical mastery in handling flesh tones, hands, dark fabrics, the neck and cuff laces, as well as in recreating stone surfaces and architectural elements. Especially noteworthy is the quality of the portrait, where the artist manages to convey personality, elegance, and naturalness through a serene expression and a direct gaze at the viewer.
Author: Francesc Parera i Munté (Barcelona, 1850 – Madrid, 1920)
Date: Signed and dated 1884.
Technique: Oil on canvas.
Measurements: Approximately 177 × 140 cm.
School: Catalan painting of the late 19th century.
