Alexander Pock, Vienna (1871-1950)
was an Austrian military, genre, and portrait painter.
He studied at the Vienna Academy under Christian Griepenkerl and Carl Rudolf Huber until 1893. From the outset he showed enthusiasm for military motifs, especially for the colorful depictions of the k.u.k. army. He demonstrated particular talent for horse scenes, especially of the k.u.k. hussars, k.u.k. dragoons, and k.u.k. uhlans. As a result, the Crown Prince Archduke Franz Ferdinand took notice of him, and supported the painter throughout his life, providing him with numerous commissions. With his studio in the dome of the Vienna noble Equitable Palace, Pock also had the appropriate ambiance to present his works to clients from the highest and loftiest noble circles.
As a graduate of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, he undertook several study trips, including studies of the Old Masters in Florence, Rome, Naples, Palermo, Munich, and Dresden. Back in Vienna, Pock established himself, not least through his naturalistic and realistic painting style, as the first address in the field of military painting. He received a high degree of recognition; his clients were mainly noble military officers, but also the well-off bourgeoisie.
