Description from the seller

Presented for auction by Second Vintage

This classic late-1950s Omega Seamaster presents a strong vintage character, distinguished by a heavy but entirely even stardust patina across its silver-tone dial. The watch retains its distinctive scalloped Omega-signed crown and features a crisp Hippocampus logo on the caseback exterior, making it an honest example of mid-century watchmaking powered by the visually bright copper-finished Caliber 503 automatic movement.

Brand: Omega
Model: Seamaster
Reference Number: 2849 - 1 SC
Serial Number: 16968266
Movement: Automatic Caliber 503
Dial: Silver-tone with even spotting stardust patina and framed date window
Case Size: 34mm (excluding the crown)
Case Material: Stainless Steel
Production Year: 1959
Condition: Good vintage condition. Timegrapher: +10+12s/day, performing remarkably well.

Dial and Hands
The silver-tone dial has developed a prominent, completely even spotting and freckling patina that provides a heavy stardust aesthetic. It features applied faceted indices with black inserts, an applied Omega logo, and a cleanly framed date window positioned at three o'clock. All original dial printing remains fully legible against the aged surface. The Dauphine style hands display significant oxidation, spotting, and surface degradation on the hour and minute hands, while the sweep seconds hand shows minor oxidation. This heavy oxidation matches the aged visual character of the dial.

Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case features a polished finish and displays moderate surface scratches and honest wear consistent with its age. The lugs retain good thickness but show signs of previous polishing. A smooth polished bezel integrates into the case design, showing light surface scratches and minor wear marks. On the right side, the distinctive decagonal, scalloped crown is clearly signed with the Omega logo and remains in good condition with minor wear. The caseback exterior is a highlight, retaining a remarkably crisp Seamaster Hippocampus logo. A clear, domed acrylic crystal protects the dial, showing no major scratches, cracks, or chips.

Movement
Inside the case beats the Omega Caliber 503 automatic movement, featuring 20 jewels. The movement is visually excellent, with its signature copper-colored plating remaining bright and well-preserved. The rotor and bridges appear clean, showing no obvious signs of corrosion or heavy tool marks, and the plates are engraved with the Omega Watch Co Swiss signature and the matching serial number. Exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece. The raw timegrapher reading is +10+12s/day.

Strap
The watch is fitted with a brown leather strap featuring white contrast stitching. The strap appears to be in near-new condition with minimal wear, providing a high-quality, comfortable fit that complements the aged dial.

Condition
Good vintage condition. The watch displays honest wear and a cohesive aging process. The dial and hands share a heavy, matching patina and oxidation that define the aesthetic of the piece. The stainless steel case exhibits moderate surface scratches and signs of previous polishing, while the caseback logo remains unusually crisp. The movement is visually clean and well-preserved. Supported by the recorded timegrapher data, the caliber is performing remarkably well.

Dimensions
The case measures 34mm in diameter, excluding the crown.

Remarks
This Seamaster excels through its honest aging and the striking uniformity of its stardust dial patina. The retention of the crisp caseback Hippocampus and the distinctive scalloped crown add significant appeal to an already attractive mid-century timepiece.

History
The Omega Seamaster was introduced in 1948 to celebrate the brand's centenary, quickly establishing itself as a robust and reliable daily wear timepiece. By the late 1950s, the collection had evolved to include refined dress proportions and reliable automatic calibers with date complications, such as the Caliber 503. These models represent an important era of Omega production, combining elegant mid-century design with dependable mechanical engineering.
