The painter Jan Holtrop was born in 1917 in Lemmer, Friesland. When Jan was five years old, the Holtrop family moved to Hilversum, where they started a fish shop on Leeghwaterstraat.

Jan Holtrop went to school at the Hilversum Christian Lyceum, where he quickly excelled at drawing. Jan already dreamed of a life as a painter (perhaps in Laren?). Like his older brothers Teus and Piet, Jan enjoyed drawing from an early age. Jan often went out with his sketchbook into nature.
His son Ronald helped work on this painting.

De kunstschilder Jan Holtrop werd in 1917 in het Friese Lemmer geboren. Toen Jan vijf jaar oud was verhuisden de familie Holtrop naar Hilversum, waar ze in de Leeghwaterstraat een vishandel begonnen.

Jan Holtrop ging naar school op het Hilversume Christelijk Lyceum, waar hij al snel uitblonk in tekenen. Jan droomde toen al van een bestaan als kunstschilder (wellicht in Laren?). Evenals zijn oudere broers Teus en Piet tekende Jan van jongs af aan al graag. Jan trok er vaak op uit, met zijn schetsboek de natuur in.
