Description from the seller
Vattel (Emer de)
The Law of Nations, or Principles of the Law of Nature applied to the conduct and affairs of nations and sovereigns.
London, s.i., 1758.
3 volumes in-12 (16.5 x 10 cm), marbled calf (antique binding), spine with raised bands, title and volume labels in morocco, red edges, [2]-lix-480; [2]-532; [2]-510 pages (complete). Corners rubbed, upper spines shaved, some loss of leather on the covers (not serious), rare foxing. Good overall condition.
Edition dated to the original, but in-12 format, of this fundamental text, giving the first clear and elegant description of the international legal order. The master work of Emer de Vattel (1714 - 1767), regarded as one of the most influential authors in the history of the Law of Nations and International Law, includes a preface in which he justifies his project and specifies the legal perspective he intends to follow, and preliminaries that recount the general ideas of the Law of Nations.
The work is then divided into four books: the first is devoted to the characteristics of the nation, the second to external relations, the third to war, and the fourth to peace and embassies. According to the principle of the equal sovereignty of States — each of them being composed of a society of free men.
Pleasant copy.
