Ruben van Veen (born 1960) lives and works in the Netherlands and studied drawing and painting at the Volksuniversiteit in Gouda and at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. He has been exhibiting since 1992. His work is included in museum and private collections. In 2016 a catalogue appeared, “Ruben van Veen / Drawings Paintings Cardboard,” a selection of his work from 1994–2016.

Ruben van Veen makes drawings, paintings, and works on cardboard using a figurative, intuitive approach in which the unconscious forms an important part of the creative process.
Without a predefined plan, he starts with a piece. Then a human figure always appears. Usually accompanied by an animal, a fruit, or an everyday object. This combination of images offers a glimpse into a bizarre world. The leading theme in the work is the human being and the complex social relationship that people have with one another. It is about desires and fears and marks the thin line between seducing and repelling, harmony and conflict, tenderness and combat.
Not without irony, he makes an attempt to visualize the riddle of life and he is in search of a continually shifting ideal of beauty.
