Description from the seller
Elegant sterling silver desk set, crafted around the middle of the 20th century by the renowned Spanish silversmith Pedro Durán. On a rectangular base of repoussé and chased silver with decorative vegetal motifs, there rise two interwoven swan-shaped inkwells that hold, as monumental fountain-pen nibs, two solid silver plumes. The perimeter border of garlands and the four feet cut in the shape of leaves add a refined balance between functionality and modernist aesthetics.
Pedro Durán (Madrid, 1884–1961) was a Spanish silversmith and jeweler, founder of Casa Durán in 1910. Trained at Madrid’s silversmithing schools, he stood out for fusing Baroque historicism with modernist lines. His sterling silver, always stamped with his hallmark and the 925‰ contrast, won prizes at the National Expositions of Decorative Arts in 1929 and 1936. After his death, the family firm keeps his artisanal tradition alive, adapting it to contemporary designs.
