Description from the seller
Elegant molded and pressed crystal vase, the so-called “Medici” model, made by the Val Saint Lambert crystal works in the second half of the 20th century, presumably between the 1950s and 1970s. With its monumental silhouette inspired by the grand ceremonial vases of classical tradition and its highly elaborate geometric decoration, this model illustrates how the manufacture preserves major historical typologies while adapting them to 20th-century taste.
The vase features a wide flared bowl resting on an imposing baluster stem, itself supported by a hexagonal stepped base. The whole is fully animated by a rich molded decoration evocative of the effects of crystal cutting. The upper part is covered by a dense network of diamond points, forming a succession of triangular and lozenge motifs that intensely catch the light. A frieze of vertical gadroons marks the transition to the middle section, while the lower swelling of the bowl receives a decoration of geometric facets in a lattice. The same decorative construction is found on the neck of the stem and extends to the hexagonal terrace, whose facets and sharp edges emphasize the architectural character of the piece. In some areas, a slight excess of material resulting directly from the molding process can still be seen, evidence of the manufacturing technique rather than a later alteration.
The piece is in very good structural condition, with no cracks, major chips, or restorations. The crystal remains perfectly transparent and retains a beautiful ability to reflect light through the numerous reliefs of the decoration. However, the interior shows a very slight corrosion of the crystal, mainly visible upon close inspection and discreet in the overall presentation. The presence of a few traces related to the molding process should also be regarded as a manufacturing characteristic rather than a defect. This example is unsigned.
After World War II, Val Saint Lambert continued operating, developing in parallel its cut-crystal productions and a substantial range of molded and pressed pieces. This technique allows the factory to revive classic shapes and apply them with complex geometric decorations, while preserving the quality and the light play characteristic of the house’s crystal. The “Medici” model thus sits in this continuity between classical heritage, industrial know-how, and the geometric aesthetics of the 20th century, giving this piece a presence that is both traditional and decisively sculptural.
Dimensions are:
- Height: 24.1 centimeters,
- Upper diameter: 17.2 centimeters,
- Base diameter: 11.3 centimeters,
