With this square-format artwork, Medsan sets a kitsune, the nine-tailed fox spirit of Japanese folklore, singing at full blast in a neon-lit karaoke box, glitter ball and Hokusai's Great Wave on the screen.

The treatment adopts the style of contemporary manga illustration: clean lines, saturated colors, a red and white kimono with flowing patterns, nine blazing tails unfurling throughout the room. The decor is teeming with details — table littered with glasses and a tambourine, edamame, remote control, violet padded walls. The neon sign メドサン signs the piece.

The work engages the mythical creature in dialogue with today’s Japanese pop culture. The kitsune, mischievous and seductive spirit of ancient legends, surrenders to the real pleasure of a karaoke night — the sacred and the profane, myth and everyday life, united in a single burst of joy.

About the Studio:
