Biography of Antoni Tusell i Ribas (Terrassa, 1908–1998)
Antoni Tusell i Ribas was a Catalan painter, draftsman, and illustrator born in Terrassa in 1908. He developed a long career linked to both figurative painting and graphic arts and advertising. Specialized sources place his death in 1998.
His contact with art began very young. At about thirteen he started working at the Reial Cercle Artístic de Barcelona and studied at the Academía Baixas and later at the Escola de Belles Arts de Barcelona (Llotja). By 1924, at only sixteen, he began working in the graphic workshops of Seix & Barral, where he stood out in illustration, posters, and advertising.
Concurrently he developed a significant body of pictorial work. Tusell mainly cultivated a figurative painting of post-impressionist character, focused on landscapes, urban views, and interiors. A noted feature of his work is painting directly from nature, aiming to transfer to the canvas the light and atmosphere of the moment. His brushwork is loose and expressive, with special interest in color and lighting effects. A specialized gallery relates certain aspects of his pictorial sensitivity to the tradition of Francesc Gimeno.
He also had a prominent career as a commercial illustrator. Among his best-known works are illustrations and advertisements for Cola Cao during the 1950s, also attributed the well-known colonial-themed drawing historically used on the brand’s packaging.
His easel work includes interiors, mountain landscapes, towns, and urban scenes. For example, a painting titled Bellver, dated 1962, oil on canvas, is documented.
In 1998 a monograph devoted specifically to the artist, Antoni Tusell i Ribas, was published, edited by Jordi J. Sánchez and issued by Ketres Editora, which brings together biographical notes and the painter’s works.
