Gaston Sébire (1920-2001)
Painter born August 18, 1920 in Saint-Samson in Calvados. Died in 2001.
He was named Official Painter of the Navy in 1973.
From 1936 to 1944, after his studies, Gaston Sébire worked at night at the Rouen posts to devote himself to painting by day.
After settling in Paris in 1951, while remaining faithful to his Normandy, in 1953 Gaston Sébire designed costumes and sets for “l’Ange gris” by Cuevas. From the 1960s onward, he regularly participated in group exhibitions: the Salon des Indépendants; the Salon d’Automne; the Salon Comparaisons; the Salon des Artistes Français; the Salon d’Angers.
He also took part in various exhibitions of the School of Paris at the Galerie Charpentier in Paris between 1953 and 1961. In 1957 Gaston Sébire returned to Normandy, where he settled with his family.
From 1965 he exhibited at Wally Findlay Galleries in New York, Paris, and Chicago.
Winner of the Critics’ Prize in 1953, the Greenshields Prize in 1957, he obtained the Gold Medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1968.
In 1991 the Navy Museum paid tribute to Gaston Sébire for the entire summer.
