VOLTA - "Once Upon a Forest"

The forest appears as a story that has already begun, without revealing either the beginning or the destination.
Deep greens, blues and turquoise accumulate in dense vegetation, crossed by sudden touches of pink, yellow and coral. Among the fronds, a small rosy sun rises like a presence distant, almost hidden by the painting itself.
The brushstrokes overlap until they blur leaves, water and depth, leaving to the eye the task of finding a passage. The ancient Romantic idea of the forest as a place of the unknown returns here freed from naturalistic description. The forest becomes a threshold: just follow its color to get the impression that something is about to happen.

A coral disc burns behind the foliage and cannot pass: the leaves hold it back, shattering it into pink shards that fall across the canvas. The brushstroke is a dense heartbeat of short touches, thousands of small green, blue, and yellow commas laid side by side until every escape route is blocked. The blue here is not water nor sky, but the very depth of the forest, the distance breathed between one branch and another. Where once the eye looked at the garden from the shore, now it is inside it, surrounded, with the grass rising in warm strokes toward the bottom of the canvas. It is a painting of pure vibration, where light does not illuminate: it insinuates, drips, flares in staccato moments among the leaves.

Volta’s search moves along the path of a return—not nostalgic, but active. The great tradition of European painting is the starting point: the period each work evokes, from time to time. But the gesture with which this heritage is crossed is unequivocally contemporary. Color does not illustrate, it breathes. The brushstroke does not describe, it vibrates. What remains of the past is the deep structure—a certain idea of the body, of space, of light—while the surface is fully present, fully alive. Volta does not cite, returns: his compositions seem to emerge from a shared cultural memory, brought to light with different eyes.
