His artistically gifted mother fought to get through to West Berlin with her son in the final phase of the war, where the two settled after the war. There Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon discovered his interest in painting—particularly in expressionist artists as well as the works of Pablo Picasso. The East Berlin-born painter Otto Nagel became his mentor from about 1954 and taught him first practical skills and painting techniques.
