Description from the seller
Product Description
Vintage Japanese Medicine/Pharmaceutical Advertising Sign
This is a captivating antique advertising sign associated with Japan's traditional medicine and pharmaceutical culture.
This rare, circular sign features bold brush-style calligraphy and a decorative finish in black and red lacquer (or a lacquer-style paint). The text refers to medicines and pharmaceutical products, including the traditional phrase "Kaichu Yoyaku" (meaning "essential medicine to carry with you at all times").
Text such as "Honpo" (Main Store/Manufacturer) and "Suzuki Sei..." (Suzuki Pharma...) is visible at the bottom, indicating it was originally a sign for a pharmaceutical manufacturer or pharmacy. Due to age and wear, some parts of the original text are difficult to decipher.
The bold black-and-red design, raised (or embossed-style) lettering, and naturally aged surface give this piece a wonderful Japanese vintage atmosphere.
Japanese pharmacy signs were a significant form of commercial advertising. These old signs offer a fascinating glimpse into the history of Japanese medicine, traditional commerce, and graphic design. Such signs are collected worldwide as examples of Japanese folk art and historical advertising memorabilia. Surviving signs—especially those with clearly preserved text and official logos—are becoming increasingly rare and valuable over time.
