With this vertical-format artwork, Medsan composes, through a double exposure, the silhouette of an old monk walking in the snow, umbrella and staff in hand, inside of which a whole snowy Japanese village curls up.

The treatment leans into sumi-e and watercolor: the monk’s figure is brushed in a wash of black ink, deep and fluid, while inside his robe a softly toned winter scene is revealed — houses with snowy thatched roofs, a vermilion bridge, a pagoda and warm lanterns under the flakes. The textured washi paper and the delicate blue highlights lend the whole a muffled, silent atmosphere. The red cartouche メドサン signs the work.

The piece meditates on inner journey and serene solitude. The monk and the landscape are one: the man carries within him the village, the silence of winter, and the peace of contemplation. Medsan captures that suspended moment when traveler and world merge, in the purest tradition of Japanese contemplative art.
