Description from the seller
Considered to be one of the finest 19th century illustrated editions of the TYLL EULENSPIEGEL legend.
Johann Heinrich Ramberg (1763–1840) was one of the most important German illustrators of the late 18th and early 19th century. His work shaped how many classic German stories were visually imagined,
While this book is a posthumous edition of 1863, the whole collection of Ramberg's 55 etched plates for his Eulenspiegel circle is published here for the first time. Some of the plates were published earlier during his lifetime in small portfolios or separately. The whole series for this book was printed from the original plates in the possession of the family estate.
40 pages of Eulenspiegel texts after the "Jahrmarkts-Ausgabe", followed by 55 etched plates with protective tissues,
The illustration pages are with foxing mainly on the large margins, as the images themselves are mostly protected by the tissue paper which absorbed the foxing.
Oblong original full-cloth binding with embossed ornamental frame. Spine at tails and corners with some wear. (please inspect the photos).Gilt edges.
This edition is hardly seen on the market, no auction record for many years.
(shipping via registered airmail, arrival time 14 - 30 working days, depending on destination, to Italy we ship with EMS courier).
