Kustanov (XX-XXI) - Marea di Silenzio

In “Tide of Silence”, Kustanov interprets the seascape through a contemporary, material, and highly evocative language, transforming the surface of the canvas into a boundary place between land and water. The painting, realized with a mixed oil/acrylic technique and physical interventions on canvas, develops in a horizontal composition dominated by the infinite chromatic variations of the sea.

The upper part of the scene is a vast expanse of moving water, built through overlays of deep blues, turquoises, marine greens, and milky glazes. The painterly matter is rich, irregular and vibrant: light protrusions, abrasions and ripples create the suggestion of sea foam and of light breaking on the marine surface.

Towards the shore, the color gradually shifts to warmer and earthier tones. The beach emerges through a granular, almost sedimented matter, where ocher, rust, browns and reds evoke an ancient land shaped by time and sea. Small raised elements, reminiscent of shells and natural fragments, reinforce the three-dimensional character of the work and make the canvas surprisingly tactile.

The boundary between water and sand is not sharp, but jagged and variable: a living line of pale matter suggests the constant advance and retreat of the tide. It is precisely in this encounter between the two elements that the painting finds its greatest expressive strength.

With “Tide of Silence”, Kustanov offers a vision of the sea not descriptive but emotional, where matter becomes memory, erosion and movement. An intense and refined work, capable of bringing into the exhibition space the physical sensation of the coast, the distant murmur of waves, and the deep quiet of a landscape observed without time.
