Description from the seller

Title:
Large decorative ceramic plate with black-figure - Mythological scene of combat (Oplitomachia / Amazonomachia) - Italy, 1990s

Description of the Object:
Refined and excellent decorative plate for wall or display, made in Italy in the 1990s as an art reproduction inspired by the famous Archaic Attic black-figure ceramics (6th century BC).

Subject and Decoration:
The central round depicts a lively warrior clash. On the left, a female figure armed with spear and shield (possibly the goddess Athena or an Amazon) wears an elegant chiton finely incised; in the center, a hoplite with horned helmet, sword, and beaked Boeotian-type shield advances in a dynamic pose. At the bottom, in the exergal/exergue zone, there is a winged figure lying (siren or harpy). The composition is enclosed by a wide peripheral band decorated with the classic meander and cross motif.

Technical Capacity:
The workmanship shows notable artisanal skill. The graffito-incisions (used to define drapery, anatomy, and armor details) are executed with extreme precision. Of particular interest is the surface treatment: the craftsman applied a careful aging patina and artificial calcareous encrustations to simulate the look of an archaeological dig and give the piece an authentic and tactile appearance.

Conditions:
Great overall conservational conditions. No structural chipping or visible fraying. Aging and surface encrustations are part of the artistic workmanship of the period.

Technical Details:

Type: Decorative art ceramic
Origin: Italy
Era: 1990s
Style: Greco-Archaic / Attic black-figure (Grand Tour style)
Technique: Hand-painted terracotta with graffito incised details and antiqued patina
