Three black arcade cabinets — Moon Patrol, Joust — line up against a light-colored wall; in front of the center one, a blond boy in a gray sweatshirt and denim shorts, white socks and brown loafers, is playing away from the viewer, entirely absorbed. To the left, a large bay window opens onto a deserted street and the ochre façades of an old neighborhood, under a bright blue sky. Semiotically, the painting contrasts two windows: that of the city, vast, real, empty — and that of the screen, tiny, artificial, inhabited. The child has chosen the latter, and the sunbeam on the floor measures the time he does not spend there. The composition, with a strict frontal stance, owes everything to Hoppe’s silence; the finish is smooth, the palette reduced to glimmering grays, the lacquered black of the cabinets and the blue of the glass.
