VOLTA - "Balloons in Full Bloom"

The wall is painted in dense, close-together touches, green on green, dotted with whites and dark shadows until the surface ceases to be masonry and becomes foliage: architecture and garden blend in the same pulse. Three arched windows open like violet wells in the thicket, and the road below is a carpet of lilac and apricot pebbles, each marked by a single brushstroke. Across it rise red, yellow, pink, and blue balloons — clear, light bodies that cut through the bustle with their fullness of color. Where old painting sought the absorbed quiet of a sunlit wall, here the same quiet is invaded by a celebration: no figures, only traces of a joy just past or just begun. The vertigo of a silent place remains, which has decided, for a day, to be in celebration.

What remains of the past is the deep structure — a certain idea of body, space, light — while the surface is fully present, fully alive. Volta does not quote, returns: his compositions seem to emerge from a shared cultural memory, brought to light with different eyes.
