ARTIST'S BIOGRAPHY
BERNARDINO LABRADA (Cali, Colombia, 1934) was born in the traditional San Antonio de Santiago neighborhood of Cali. He trained in the Fine Arts milieu of Cali and is considered a figure linked to the artistic tradition of the Valle del Cauca.
His painting mainly starts from figuration, although throughout his career he incorporated resources of simplification and abstraction. Among his themes appear popular and rural scenes, musicians and serenaders, rural funerals, workers, fishermen, washerwomen, childhood, and elements from the myths and legends of the Colombian Pacific.
His style is characterized by the importance of the human figure, drawing, color, and a lyrical interpretation of reality, more focused on conveying emotion than on strictly realistically reproducing what is depicted. The Universidad del Valle organized a retrospective exhibition of his work, highlighting precisely the different stages, themes, and palettes developed over decades of activity.
