Description from the seller

First original edition published in 1881 of this famous and historic medical treatise on the anatomy and physiology of human reproduction and obstetrics, written by Dr. Gustave-Joseph Witkowski.

A fundamental and highly sought-after work within medical collecting due to its spectacular graphic apparatus: it contains 226 wood engravings interleaved in the text (covering embryology, fetal development, stages of childbirth, instruments, weighing and puericulture) and, prominently, its 2 famous and complex system-based anatomical plates with movable and overlapping flap sections (flap anatomy) colored:

- Plate I: Genital organs of the woman (drawn by Léveillé according to the invention of Dr. Witkowski, with its complete explanatory legend on the opposite page).

- Plate II: Grossesse à terme (dissection of the female abdomen and fetus through overlapping, deployable and articulated flaps).

Condition:

Contemporary half-leather binding with raised bands, gold-tooling and double hinge on the spine (Witkowski / La Génération Humaine), with marbled endpapers. Solid and firm structure. Interior exceptionally clean and fresh for a medical work from 1881, without serious rust stains. The two plates with movable overlapping flaps are complete, intact and fully functional (something very unusual given the fragility of these anatomical mechanisms). Includes the original Errata leaf at the end of the volume.

A medical museum piece in an outstanding state of preservation.

Dimensions: 24.5 x 16 x 2.5 cm
Number of pages: 351
