Roberto Carignani (1894-1975) - Paesaggio

Roberto Carignani (Naples 1894 - 1975) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, a pupil of Michele Cammarano, of whom some critics considered him an heir, and of Edoardo Dalbono, Giuseppe De Sanctis and Vincenzo Volpe, artists linked to the school of Domenico Morelli. He debuted together with Luigi Crisconio, exhibiting for the first time in Rome and then in Naples, and was regarded as among the most promising painters of his generation. Defined as the natural heir to the Iberian painting thread in the style of El Greco, Velázquez, and Goya, he was a prominent painter in a Neapolitan era marked by the suffering and misery of the postwar period. He was appreciated by Vincenzo Gemito and, much later, by De Chirico who, admiring his works in a gallery in Rome, said of him: "but Naples knows it has such a son?"
