Gérard Gachet has left us a body of work that only asks to be grasped by words. It is romantic, fantastical, realistic.

It vibrates, as he himself keenly sensed, with the breath of the old German Rhine that drives in jets, in twists, in stormy waves the beards, the hair, the feminine tufts. One can sense the pines around bodies arched by spasms. But all materials tempt this great artist—granular, scaly, polished, sticky, lush.

Under storm light — sometimes subdued and heavy, sometimes brilliant — women part their legs painted with a tragic meticulousness. Yet Gérard Gachet’s eroticism is not absolutely morbid; it is betrayed by a sensual love of bodily forms whose harmonious curves are caressed by a painter who cannot help — even if he starts from something abstract or claims symbolism — to communicate his desire and his pleasure to us. And no doubt he feared addressing sexuality of our gaze too directly, hence these reptiles and amphibians which, according to him, refused anthropomorphism — a needless fear — the vulvas of his women can be as troubling as those of Courbet’s women but, enigmatic, they repel as much as they attract.
