FRANK E. GONZALEZ - “ In front of the wall” (XL)

Frank González Martínez (Cuba, 1990) has found in painting a territory where personal experience transcends the autobiographical to become a reflection on the human condition. His artistic practice arises from the need to understand concepts like freedom, identity and memory, building a pictorial language in which gesture, matter and color act as vehicles of emotion and thought.

From a perspective deeply tied to migratory experience, his work questions what remains of a person when they are forced to leave their country, their landscape, their family and the affections that have defined their history. More than representing places, González Martínez paints states of consciousness. His compositions become spaces where memory dialogues with absence and where nostalgia ceases to be understood as a look to the past to transform into a force capable of rebuilding identity.

In this context, landscape —whether represented explicitly or suggested through the pictorial atmosphere— takes on symbolic value. It becomes a place of contemplation, refuge and resistance; a space where the artist projects his concerns and finds a way to reconcile memory with the present. Likewise, everyday elements such as flowers cease to be simple natural motifs to become metaphors of fragility, hope and the capacity to bloom even after uprooting.

Frank González Martínez's painting does not offer definitive answers. It invites the viewer to stop, contemplate and recognize themselves in an experience that, although born from a specific context like the Cuban one, speaks of a universal feeling: the search for a place to call home.

I believe this version is at an appropriate level for an exhibition catalog. It avoids making an explicit political discourse about Cuba, but allows the viewer to understand that the migratory experience and the quest for freedom constitute the conceptual backdrop of the work, something that is often more solid from a curatorial point of view.
