17th-century altar candlestick / church candlestick – brass/bronze – about 48 cm
Exceptionally handsome and imposing 17th-century altar candlestick, executed in a copper alloy, presumably brass or bronze.
The candlestick features a richly decorated three-foot base with on each side a finely worked Renaissance mask, surrounded by symmetrical volutes and stylized foliage motifs. The three sturdy legs end in rounded feet.
Above the tripod is a tall, contoured and baluster-shaped stem with several twisted and lobed decorative elements. The broad, rounded drip pan carries a long central candle hole.
The design, ornamentation and proportions are characteristic of European Renaissance of the 16th century and give the candlestick a distinctly ecclesiastical and monumental character.
The underside is open and shows the interior of the old casting. The surface has a lovely warm gold-brown patina and clear signs of age and use, including localized wear, discolorations, small irregularities and oxidation. These are fitting for the object’s great age and contribute to the authentic character.
