Artistic Description and Subject

A classic and evocative oil-on-canvas marine painting depicting a majestic three-masted sailing ship (likely a clipper) fully at sea. The work stands as a full-fledged part of the solid landscape and nautical tradition of the Dutch school of the twentieth century. The ship, captured in a three-quarter view, cuts decisively through the rippling waves, propelled by the wind that fills the entire sails.

The artist demonstrates excellent command of the naval and atmospheric genre: the chromatic contrast between the dark ocean, painted with bold, foaming brushstrokes in the foreground, and the warm luminosity that bathes the sails creates a notable dramatic and dynamic effect. The background features a dense, shifting sky typical of the North Sea, where gray, moisture-laden clouds open to sudden flashes of light and blue.

Signature, Inscriptions and Technical Details
Front of the work: In the lower right, on dark-on-dark, the artist’s autograph signature "P. Hansen" stands out clearly.

Back of the work: The original canvas, slightly darkened in color indicating a probable dating to the mid-20th century, is well stretched on its contemporary frame. On the back of the wooden frame are handwritten numerals "83 63" and "68 48", corresponding to the outer dimensions of the frame and the net dimensions of the canvas.

Conditions and Frame
The painting is presented in excellent general conservation condition. The pictorial surface is sound, without evident color losses, and retains the vivid chiaroscuro contrasts. The work is offered within a light-toned wooden frame, enriched with an inner gold profile and a passepartout insert. It should be noted that this latter shows some natural patination and small spots due to the passage of time, which do not affect the reading of the work but testify to its historical nature.

Condition Report:
Overall state: The work is in good structural condition and in its original state, with no recent restoration interventions.
Pictorial surface: Shows a natural craquelure network, evenly distributed across the surface, consistent with aging of the oil binders of the period. Some minimal and localized patina and very slight superficial scratches in the upper part of the sky are noted, not affecting the overall aesthetic rendering of the subject. A stain at the upper left and a scratch at the upper right, plus other minor defects visible in photos.
Support: The original canvas maintains proper tension on the wooden frame of the era. The back shows the natural patina of time.

The visible frame in the photos is included in the lot as a pure gift from me and is not part of the sale, does not determine its value, and, due to its delicacy, is not insured. Consequently, any pre-existing defects on the frame are not reported, and any damage to it during transport will not be considered for claims or returns.

As an alternative to shipping, if possible, personal pickup in Geneva is always the option I prefer and strongly recommend, as it eliminates shipping costs and ensures maximum safety for the work. If shipping is chosen, I will do my best to package it to protect the frame during transit.
