Description from the seller
MOORE (Thomas)
Memoirs of the Life of the Right Honourable Richard Brinsley Sheridan.
A. and W. Galignani, Paris, 1825.
2 volumes in-12, (17.8 x 10.7 cm), X-439 pp.; VI-500 pp., bound. Half morocco with long grain, tawny corners, decorated spine, gilt title, double gilt filet along the leather border, marbled edges. Contemporary binding. Small foxing along the margins of the leaves and on the title, small paper loss at the foot of p. 337 (vol. I) without seriousness or impact on the text. Very good overall.
First French edition of this biography of the Irish playwright and politician Richard Brinsley Sheridan, written by his compatriot, the poet Thomas Moore. It appeared in the same year as the London original edition.
Illustrated with the frontispiece portrait of Sheridan and a reproduction of a newspaper page (bound in this copy at the end of the second volume).
Thomas Moore traces Sheridan’s life in two parts: the first volume is mainly devoted to his beginnings and his literary and theatrical career, while the second focuses on his political career and activity in Parliament. The work was notably composed from documents and papers supplied to Moore by Sheridan’s son.
Stamp of the library of the Château de Sancerre.
Well bound.
