Description from the seller
An oil on canvas depicting a dramatic naval engagement involving British warships during the 18th-century Age of Sail.
The principal vessel is a large three-masted ship of the line, shown under partial sail and flying the Red Ensign, with heavy gun smoke surrounding the stern and port side as it fires a broadside. A second fully rigged warship is engaged to the right, while additional vessels emerge through the smoke and atmospheric haze in the background.
The sea is rendered in deep green-grey tones with white-capped waves and impasto highlights, beneath a dramatic sky of clouds and battle smoke. The composition follows established traditional British maritime painting conventions, creating an atmospheric and visually striking depiction of naval warfare.
The painting is clearly signed “J. Harvey” in white/cream lettering in the lower right.
