Bart Hamelink (XX) - Run by Clowns

In this expressive work, three figures are shown together forming a distorted, almost clownish group. With their exaggerated faces and red noses, they seem playful, but at the same time there is something uncomfortable and confrontational in their appearance.

With this work the artist wants to show his feelings about the world. Sometimes it feels as if we are living in a reality that is steered by chaos, absurdity, and behavior that is hard to understand. He deliberately added the text “A mad world run by crazy clowns,” because it precisely expresses what he sees and feels.

Behind the apparent humor lies a serious undertone. The figures laugh, but it doesn’t feel light. It raises questions: who is in control, and where are we actually headed?

The pink and red tones reinforce that feeling. They give energy and tension to the work, while the direct, raw lines and sprayed surfaces give the whole a honest and unfiltered appearance.

As is often the case in my work, the artist uses simple shapes and almost childlike figures to tell a larger and recognizable story. It is exactly that simplicity that makes the message accessible, yet also confrontational.

The strength of the work lies in that double layer: it seems playful, but carries a clear critical view of today’s world.
