Meissen – large oval pierced/reticulated rim bowl with handles – Onion pattern – 'Knaufschwerter' period 1888–1924 – 2nd quality

Offered is a finely worked oval pierced bowl from the porcelain manufactory Meissen with the classic onion pattern in cobalt blue underglaze painting.

The bowl features a filigree, basket-weave-like pierced rim, four relief Rocaille cartouches, and two decorative braided handles. The onion pattern continues across the bowl center and the cartouches. Comparable Meissen pierced bowls are designated in the form “Neuer Ausschnitt.”

On the underside is the underglaze blue Meissen Knaufschwerter mark (button-swords mark). The mark is applied twice and identifies the piece as 2nd quality. Additionally there is an impressed number as well as further blue impressed/painted or working marks.

The execution of the swords mark and comparable Meissen pieces indicate production in the Knaufschwerterzeit, ca. 1888–1924.

Condition

The bowl is in an age-appropriate used condition. In the delicate pierced basket rim there is a visible crack/repair, clearly documented in the detailed photos. Due to the delicate pierced work, please review all photos carefully; they form part of the condition description.

Despite the noted damage, the bowl remains a very decorative historical Meissen piece with elaborate piercing work and the classic onion pattern.

The base mark, the indication as 2nd quality, and the existing damage are all disclosed fully and transparently.
