Description from the seller
Vintage Indian Brass Cobra Candlesticks & Kettle – Hand Engraved Decorative Set – c. 1960–1980
Description
A striking and highly decorative vintage Indian brass collection, comprising a pair of sculptural cobra-form candlesticks together with a charming traditional brass kettle. Estimated to date from approximately 1960–1980, this unusual ensemble beautifully reflects the rich tradition of Indian decorative metalwork.
The two candlesticks are undoubtedly the centrepieces of the collection. Each is fashioned as a coiled cobra, its long sinuous body forming the base before rising into an impressive expanded hood. The brass is richly engraved with floral and foliate ornamentation, while the candle holders above are surrounded by elegant lotus-inspired petals. The combination of the cobra and lotus motifs gives the pieces a particularly exotic and sculptural presence.
Accompanying the pair is an attractive brass kettle/teapot, with a rounded body, elegant curved spout, removable lid with pointed finial and a warm-toned turned wooden carrying handle. Displayed together, the three pieces form an exceptionally decorative group with considerable character.
The lot comprises:
* 2 × brass cobra candlesticks – approx. 21 cm high × 20 cm wide each
* 1 × brass kettle/teapot – approx. 11 cm high × 22.5 cm wide
Material: Brass, with wooden handle to the kettle
Origin: India
Estimated period: c. 1960–1980 / second half of the 20th century
Condition: Good vintage condition with age-related surface wear, patination, tarnishing and oxidation consistent with the material and age. The undersides of the cobra bases show visible oxidation/patination. The kettle and wooden handle also display natural signs of previous use and age. These characteristics contribute to the authentic vintage appearance of the collection. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
A wonderfully unusual and highly decorative Indian brass ensemble, combining the powerful sculptural form of the cobra with intricate traditional engraving. An eye-catching collection for lovers of vintage brassware, Indian decorative arts, eclectic interiors and distinctive statement pieces.
