Large Italian majolica wall plaque – hand-painted Historia/Renaissance scene – 48 cm – 19th century
Offered is an exceptionally large and elaborately hand-painted majolica/faience display plaque with a diameter of about 48 cm and a notable weight of about 4.3 kg.
The entire front side is decorated with an extremely detailed, multicolored figurative scene. In the center stands a crowned female figure in a vivid blue gown, surrounded by several people. To the left a ceremonial or sacrificial action with vessels and fire is depicted, while on the right a bearded man sits by a watercourse. A monumental architecture, lush vegetation, vessels, fruit and the landscape form the elaborately worked background.
The depiction stylistically follows the Italian Istoriato painting of the Renaissance, where historical, mythological or biblical narratives occupy the entire surface of a ceramic object.
According to execution, material and style, it is likely an Italian majolica/faience work from the 19th century, probably from the period of Historicism or Renaissance Revival. A specific manufactory cannot be determined with certainty due to lack of an observable maker’s mark.
The plaque has on the back an older hanging device and was evidently intended for prominent display as a wall object.

Condition
The plaque is in an age-appropriate condition with visible signs of wear. The glaze shows age-related craquelure. At the edge there are several losses of glaze and material, well documented in the close-up photos.
The elaborate painting is overall impressively preserved and, despite age-related signs, has a very strong decorative effect.
