Description from the seller
I've painted a lot of couples, but this one is different — it's not about the kiss itself, it's about the second right before it, when everything else in the world goes quiet except the person in front of you. Two faces lean in, breath apart, while a hand reaches up — maybe to remove a hat, maybe just to touch a cheek — and somewhere above them, half-forgotten, a golden crown sits at an angle, like something set aside the moment it stopped mattering.
I think everyone who's ever waited for a moment to arrive — a word, a touch, a decision someone else had to make first — will recognize something of themselves here. That's the only feeling I was really after: the ache of almost, held just before it resolves into anything at all.
I built the entire background out of hundreds of small checkered squares, each one painted by hand — burgundy, ochre, deep green, rose — because that's what a moment like this actually feels like from the inside: a thousand small, separate seconds, pressed so close together they start to look like one continuous breath. It took me longer than almost anything I've made. The crown is gold leaf, real weight against the canvas — the one thing in the painting that's undeniably precious, even set slightly to the side, even if the two people in front of it don't seem to notice it's there.
