Christiane Ancel (1936) – Still Life “Ambiance 1900” – Oil on canvas, 1986

Elegant oil still life on canvas executed in 1986 by French painter Christiane Ancel (born Bihl in 1936), Alsatian artist from Colmar, known for a figurative painting style of striking accuracy and for her refined interior and still life compositions.

The work fully belongs to that distinctive painterly atmosphere associated with the artist’s output and defined as “Ambiance 1900”: a timeless, elegant domestic universe where objects, fabrics and fruit are gathered in compositions of classic taste, illuminated with great attention to reflections and the rendering of different surfaces.

At the center of the composition stands a splendid metal raised stand filled with fruit, with pineapple, apples, white grapes and citrus fruits rendered with notable precision. The fruit’s gloss brightly emerges from the dark background, creating a pleasant chromatic contrast.

Beside the stand appears a small antique book and, on the right, a characteristic oil lamp in metal and glass, whose reflective surface constitutes one of the most technically interesting elements of the painting.

Particularly successful is the representation of the Persian-style carpet, with geometric and floral motifs and a long light fringe crossing the lower part of the composition. The meticulous rendering of the fabric, the transparency of the glass, the metals and the peel of the different fruits testifies to a painting attentive to detail and to matter.

The work is signed “Ch. Ancel” at the bottom right. On the back of the canvas the artist’s signature and the date 1986 appear again, along with the stamp bearing the name CHRISTIANE ANCEL and the address of the historic studio, 79 Route d'Ingersheim, 68000 Colmar.

The dating is particularly interesting in the artist’s career, since 1986 coincides with the year Christiane Ancel was awarded the Grand Prix International de Peinture de la Côte d'Azur in Cannes.

On the back are also preserved the number 254303, handwritten, and an old label DELF – Cadres d'Art, elements that help to document the physical history of the work.

The painting is presented in a substantial black picture frame, with a decoratively significant presence, featuring an inner band lined with black fabric and a slim gold-outline that gracefully complements the colors of the composition. The overall impression is particularly balanced and ready for display.
