Description from the seller
Large antique neo-Gothic brass church candlestick with cabochons – 20th century – approx. 56 cm
Magnificent and imposing antique altar candlestick made of solid brass (yellow brass), produced in the heyday of Neo-Gothic during the 20th century. With a total height of no less than 56 centimeters, this is a highly decorative and characterful object.
The candlestick excels in detailed craftsmanship. The round, perforated foot is adorned with classic neo-Gothic trefoil motifs (cloverleaf shapes) and rests on three separately cast and mounted claw feet. On the inside of the foot, the authentic traces of the old sand-casting process are still clearly visible.
The central node on the stem is inlaid around with striking colored cabochon stones (glass paste or semi-precious stones) in blue, white and black, giving the candlestick a lush appearance. The top features a broad, scalloped drip catcher with a long, sharp spike to prick a large wax candle.
The object is in a beautiful, authentic and structurally sound state. It has been intentionally not polished to a high gloss; the atmospheric, lived-in patina with old candle wax residues and oxidation rings testifies to decades of intensive ecclesiastical use and lends the piece its historical charm.
