Sergio Bizzarri was born in Spoleto (Pg) in June 1931. In the fifties he participated in various Italian exhibitions. In this phase his work was characterized mainly by “monochromatism,” with human and animal figures always depicted in black.
In the sixties he crossed into the international scene. His works were shown in Paris and at many Italian galleries.
In 1958 the Festival dei Due Mondi was born in Spoleto by Master Gian Carlo Menotti. Bizzarri sensed its importance and, with his painter friends, created in the area of ancient Spoleto the “Galleries of Art in the Cellars and in the Basements of Social Housing.” Concurrently, his participation in art exhibitions and fairs grew more prestigious in Italy, reaching Australia, Canada, the United States, Japan, etc.
In the seventies he left his job to dedicate himself completely to painting and moved his studio to an old castle in a small town in the spoletino area, Montebibico. At the end of that summer, he created in the very castle, surrounded by lush chestnut woods and in direct contact with his artistic creations, for his friends and admirers, the “Autumn Encounters,” which proved highly appreciated. Many of them were happy to spend at least a day in this mountain village, among art, nature, and genuine food.
In 1977, for his many diverse merits, Bizzarri was named Knight of the Italian Republic.
In 1984 Bizzarri felt an ever stronger and vivid desire to return to painting in his Spoleto. The charm of the alleys, narrow streets, the atmospheres, the memories of the many painter friends with whom he shared the early years of the Festival dei Due Mondi, the old studio in Via del Duomo, etc., led him to this decision. Upon his return, however, many of the old colleagues were no longer alive. He decided then to honor those Spoleto figures and others—festival organizers, patrons, actors, directors, musicians, writers, operators, etc.—by instituting the “Premio Simpatia Bizzarri.” The prize was awarded uninterruptedly until 2011 and, although it was a small event compared to the Festival, it immediately proved to be highly appreciated and sought after.
In 1992 the Marche Region and the Municipality of Ancona organized in the Ancona Palace of the Elders the first retrospective exhibition of Maestro Bizzarri, with the presentation by art critic Dario Micacchi titled “40 years of painting from informal to figurative.”
The same retrospective, expanded and enriched with the artist’s latest works, was re-presented in 2008 by the Umbria Region and the Province of Perugia, inside the prestigious Rocca Paolina in Perugia.
In 2011 the Mayor of Norcia made four rooms available, permanently, to the now octogenarian Maestro Bizzarri to exhibit 39 works from different periods that the artist donated to the City of Norcia.”} }/docs: just the JSON object.
