Description from the seller

Antique Sterling Silver Tray – Chester Hallmark, ca. 1920s

Elegant rectangular tray made from English sterling silver (925/1000), with a ribbed border and a smooth mirror-like surface. Fully British hallmarked – tested and verified by the Chester Assay Office, which closed in 1962.

Hallmarks:
Sponsor/Manufacturer mark
Guard lion – fineness hallmark for sterling silver (925)
City mark Chester (sword between three ears of wheat)
Date letter (italic "U") – indicates a dating to around 1920

Additionally, the tray bears on the underside the engraving "Specially made for Janson & Scowen" – presumably the name of the retailer for whom the piece was originally made.

In the center there is a blank engraved frame (cartouche) for a monogram – this was never inscribed.

Condition: Good, age-appropriate condition. The tray has been professionally polished, but shows light signs of wear / fine scratches on the surface as is typical for a piece over 100 years old. No dents, cracks, or repairs visible.
