The Captain's Daughter occupies the major portion of the first part of the book and is followed by several shorter tales.
A notable feature of this edition is the early English translation by Mrs. J. Buchan Telfer, born Mouravieff. This translation appeared in 1875 under the collective title Russian Romance.
Band
Nicely produced original green linen band with black geometric ornamentation. On the front cover the title Russian Romance is in gold, with a prominent gilded and black heraldic motif in the center featuring the Russian double-headed eagle and Saint George.
The spine bears the title, author’s name Poushkin, and the translator’s name in gold.
Condition
Fair, with a markedly well-preserved block for its age.
The contents look predominantly clean and legible, with only modest signs of aging and light discoloration/foxing. The photographs show a well-kept and clear text appearance.
The original linen binding shows clear signs of use and aging. In particular the spine is damaged: loss of linen at the top and bottom and a clearly damaged portion along the side of the spine where the underlying binding material is visible. Corners and edges show wear.
The gilded and black decoration on the front cover, however, is still attractive and clearly present.
At the rear is also the original Classified Catalogue of Henry S. King & Co.'s Publications, dated December 1874, an interesting feature that has been preserved with this early edition.
