AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Buddha
Laos, XVIIIe–XIXe siècle
Bronze
H. 14 cm
Very heavy for its size

This very atypical amulet represents a Buddha seated in meditation, stemming from Lao ethnic and folk production.
The iconography is sober, the Buddha is depicted in the earth-touching gesture. The aesthetics are deliberately rustic and archaizing, very distant from the refined bronzes of the royal workshops of Luang Prabang.

The face is distinguished by coarse, powerfully stylized features.
The eyes are almond-shaped, narrow and almost closed. A wide, triangular, strongly pronounced nose. A fine mouth, simply incised. Eyebrows marked by a continuous line.
The head is topped by a slender conical headdress, a popular interpretation of the ushnisha, emphasizing verticality and giving the figure an almost totemic presence.

The body presents a simple modeling with a triangular torso of abrupt planes and narrow shoulders. The drapery is reduced to a few incised lines crossing the chest. The thick, irregular circular base reinforces the ethnic character of the object. The surfaces retain tool marks and a rough texture, testifying to a locally crafted artisanal casting, intended for votive use.

The old, deep brown patina, nuanced, allows golden reflections to appear on the prominent edges, accentuating the angular volumes and the hieratic expression of the figure.

Condition:
Good overall condition for its age.
