This icon (in Amharic: አዶ or ādo) is an example of ecclesiastical craftsmanship from the 20th century. It is entirely handmade. The icon has a book form and is made of wood, paper, linen and pigments. Refined and detail- painted. The icon was acquired in situ and was the property of a student priest at the holy place Lalibela, Ethiopia.
Since the fourth century, Ethiopia has a Christian tradition. Within this tradition Ethiopian art was born. Ethiopian churches are decorated with wall inscriptions and icons. In addition, sacred scriptures are decorated with miniatures. Illiterate believers gained access to the stories of the Bible through pictorial representations. The portrayal of the story, in terms of importance, takes first place. Therefore depictions are more focused on the expression of the story than on a realistic rendering. Later in the development of Ethiopian painting, details receive more attention and depictions sometimes became more realistic.
Dimensions: 24.5 x 16 x 3.5 cm and when opened 50 cm wide.
