One pursues perfect form, the other stubbornly captures movement in matter.
There is nothing spontaneous about Mapplethorpe, the meticulous one, while Rodin relies on the flashes of gesture, even if it means accepting accidental expression. The hyper-controlled plans of the former echo the tormented roundnesses of the latter. The fragmentation of bodies, their compulsive examination, the draperies that barely conceal them mark a common, also sensual, quest.
