When melodies become color tones: As a musician, Ed Sheeran fills arenas worldwide; as a painter, he fills canvases—with the same energy and passion for rhythm and emotion. In 2019, shortly after the end of his record-breaking Divide tour, Sheeran discovered painting as a creative counterbalance to music. It soon became a stable part of his creative output. An early testament to this phase is the cover of his 2020 single "Afterglow", based on one of his abstract paintings.

In 2024, during his Mathematics tour, Sheeran intensified his artistic work: in an abandoned parking garage in the London district of Soho, he set up a temporary studio. Every morning he experimented—in a white protective suit—for hours with colors on large canvases: dynamic, gestural, spontaneous. Out of this emerged his first closed series: "The Cosmic Carpark Paintings." Even though there are unmistakable echoes of Jackson Pollock, Sheeran’s paintings have their own rhythm—and a clear stance. While Pollock elevated the act of painting to mere gesture, Sheeran transforms it into a symphony of color tones: lines, splatters, and layers, driven by the same inner rhythm that animates his music. Chaos and order, explosions and stillness: a dance that feels as intuitive as it is deliberate.

It was the idea that painting could open doors not only for him but also for others that led Sheeran to bring his works to the public. With the support of his friend Damien Hirst, he presented in London in 2025 a selection of original works and limited editions. The response was overwhelming: more than $1.25 million was raised, entirely for the Ed Sheeran Foundation—an organization that enables inclusive, high-quality music education for children and young people across Great Britain. “I liked the idea that art funds art,” said Sheeran—a principle that seamlessly links his two creative worlds.
