【Item Description】
A striking pair of hand-built stoneware planters by Japanese ceramic artist Okada Yoshimasa, whose geometrically patterned tableware earned him the Judges' Encouragement Award at the Nissin Foods Contemporary Ceramic Art "Men-bachi" Grand Prize Exhibition in 1996 (Heisei 8).

Each vessel is freely hand-formed with a dramatically pleated, draped rim and body, giving the impression of soft folded fabric captured permanently in clay. Both pots stand on three rounded, ball-shaped feet and share the same sculptural silhouette, but are finished in contrasting glazes: one in a deep, iron-black glaze with warm tan clay breaking through the folds, the other in a soft celadon-blue glaze layered with tan tones and bold dark brush strokes. The interiors reveal a rich dark glaze with hints of cobalt blue, and each pot has a drainage hole in the base, making them ideal as planters for small potted plants, bonsai, or succulents, as well as striking standalone sculptural objects.

Sold as a set of two, this pairing showcases the artist's confident, expressive hand-building technique and his skill in combining bold form with painterly glaze work.

Okada Yoshimasa is a Japanese ceramic artist closely associated with Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture — one of Japan's most renowned centers of stoneware pottery — where he has held numerous solo exhibitions. In 1996 (Heisei 8), he was awarded the Judges' Encouragement Award at the Nissin Foods Contemporary Ceramic Art "Men-bachi" Grand Prize Exhibition for a collection of geometrically patterned tableware. His work is characterized by expressive, freely hand-built forms combined with layered, painterly glazing.
