Jakub Nowicki (1994) - Robert - NO RESERVE

In this intimate portrait, Nowicki presents the sitter in close proximity, allowing the face to dominate the composition and creating an immediate sense of psychological presence. The head is turned slightly away from the viewer, while the eyes return our attention with a quiet, searching expression.

The painting is built around warm, sunlit flesh tones, with ochres, terracotta and muted reds carefully contrasted against the cool lavender and blue of the surrounding ground. This contrast gives the portrait a particular luminosity, while the visible canvas texture and expressive handling of paint retain a sense of immediacy.

Rather than pursuing photographic precision, Nowicki allows the brushwork to remain evident throughout the composition. Individual features are constructed through shifts of colour and light, giving the face a slightly dreamlike quality while preserving the sitter’s individuality.

There is a restrained tension in the expression. The subject appears contemplative and distant, caught somewhere between engagement and withdrawal. It is this psychological ambiguity, together with the confident use of colour, that gives the work its quiet intensity.

Nowicki (b. 1994, Poland) studied at the Państwowe Liceum Sztuk Plastycznych im. J. Pankiewicza in Katowice before graduating from the London College of Fashion. Working across painting and fashion, his practice is influenced by artists such as Zdzisław Beksiński and Olga Boznańska, as well as designers Philip Treacy and Alexander McQueen. His work has been exhibited in Katowice, Radomsko, and Warsaw.
