Description of the Work
Splendid icon depicting Saint Francis of Assisi, painted strictly according to the ancient canons of the Byzantine tradition. The piece is handmade on a wooden panel using the classical egg tempera technique, enriched with radiant gilding that brings luminosity and spiritual depth to the composition. The saint is portrayed with his traditional iconographic attributes: the Franciscan habit finely finished, the Book of Scriptures, the stigmata, and floral details symbolizing creation, accompanied by the characteristic little bird. The sides of the panel have a clean lateral finish, while the back is painted in a smooth and uniform brown acrylic tone, ensuring a high-level aesthetic presentation even when viewed in profile.
The Spiritual Connection with Monte Sant’Angelo
The artist who created this work lives and works in Monte Sant’Angelo, a hamlet of art and spirituality set within the Gargano National Park. The author earned the prestigious iconography certificate at the historic Pulsano Abbey.
The tradition tells that Saint Francis himself made a pilgrimage to Monte Sant’Angelo. Upon arriving at the site, the Poverello of Assisi stopped at the entrance of the Sacred Celestial Cave, where today a reliquary in the rock still bears the trace of his passage; however, feeling unworthy to tread on that ground consecrated by the Archangel Michael, he decided not to enter, stopping in prayer on the threshold.
