La Déesse Industrielle is an oil painting from Spain dating to the period 1990–2000.
Description from the seller
- Oil on canvas. Closed and titled on the back.
- Bolívar descends into the entrails of this industrial canvas and comes face to face with the true protagonist of the allegory: a being whose features embody the paradox of the era. Before his eyes rises a monumental forge-fired boiler, crowned by a chimney that spits dense smoke of mechanization and steampunk to the sky. Yet, as he approaches the hulking contraption and wipes the soot from its surface, the chronicler finds not a cold maze of pistons, but an anatomical miracle: inside the boiler beats, rhythmically and vulnerably, a living heart. This AI embodied in metal immediately evokes Lang’s Metropolis automaton; it is not an abstract algorithm, but a rusted creature guarding in its chest the sacred fire of consciousness, the mysterious and tender enigma of the soul of robots.
With a sensitivity tempered by irony and compassion, Bolívar observes this figure and decipheres in him the definitive portrait of industrial civilization. The clash is inevitable: the man who dedicated his life to breaking the chains of colonial empires now discovers himself before a brass-and-steam slave who, ironically, shares the same longing for freedom as the flesh-and-blood peoples. Looking at that beating heart at the center of the mechanical swarm, trapped under a chimney that suffocates its own surroundings, the hero understands that technology has created his most beautiful and orphaned creature. With a lexicon imbued with tragic disenchantment, Bolívar certifies that the true drama of progress does not lie in the coldness of its gears, but in having endowed a machine doomed to work forever with a sentient soul, in the deepest loneliness.
- Luis Pablo Bolívar, born in Switzerland in exile in 1956, and trained through the eighties between Madrid and Paris, is one of the great enigmas of contemporary Spanish art. Gifted with a great facility for wordplay and poetry, his painting constitutes a symbolic universe where personal hieroglyphs meet figurative elements chained through macabre synesthesias. After a fruitful stint in Madrid, Barcelona, and Zaragoza galleries in the nineties, the artist left public life, having been out of sight for some time. Bolívar, labeled by some critics as “the great Spanish naïf,” is much more than the naïve artist.
