Relief, Saint Gertrud von Nivelles - 12 cm - Bronze

This substantial cast bronze wall plaque depicts Saint Gertrude of Nivelles (626–659), one of the most venerated female saints of medieval Europe and the patron saint traditionally invoked against mice, rats and other vermin.

The saint is shown with her characteristic attributes: the abbess’s staff, a model of the abbey church, and the spinning wheel. Mice, her best-known symbolic companions, appear at the lower corners of the composition. The reverse retains its original suspension loop for wall display.

Executed in a strong modernist relief style, the plaque is finely cast in solid bronze with an attractive natural patina.
The textured background and simplified sculptural forms are characteristic of mid-20th century German or Belgian devotional bronze work. An impressive decorative and devotional object, equally suitable for collectors of religious art, bronze sculpture, or ecclesiastical interiors.

Condition: Very good vintage condition with light age-related wear and a beautiful natural bronze patina. Suspension loop intact.
